Writers’ Journal #27 – Moonwatcher

Spread the love

Moonwatcher scanned the night sky with deep intent.

He shivered as the cold desert air brushed past his naked body covered only with the leaves. The desert looked barren and lifeless to untrained eyes but to the hunter as experienced as him , there are preys to kill for. He started running towards the brightest star in the sky knowing there will be an underground lake after a while surrounded by nocturnal animals looking for a good rest and drinks.

He moved swiftly yet quietly along the steep walls so as to ensure he wasn’t being noticed. Soon , he reached the entrance of the cave that looked like a tiger’s mouth. He stopped to catch his breath before slowly tip-toped along the inner wall of the cave. The moon was at its peak and there were still sufficient light for him to move around.

Inside the cave , there were fresh paintings on the wall done by those who dwelled in the cave not long ago. The colours were not as bright as he remember when he first come here in his youth. He faced forward again to the narrow path between the two large rock near the back of the cave and walked towards into the dark. he tighted the grip on the wodden stick that he was holding. He fashioned a stone tip at the end of the stick early for better kill.

He squeezed along the path sideway , trying to avoid brishing his body against the sharp edges , and finaclly reached the wide open space full of trees , grass and a lake in the middle. He could have come from the other end and it would have been easier but he would also have been easily frighten away the animals drinking water along the edge of the lake.  He lowered his body near to the ground and crawled towards themoonlightbouncing off from the surface of the lake.

The errie silence surrounded him and he became aware of the danger. There were no animals as far as he could see and he knew it could only meant that there was another hunter or a group of hunters before him. He stopped in his track and plan for the escape route. His hightened senses still could not notice any signs of movement nearby yet his instinct told him otherwise. The fact that he couldn’t sense the location of the mysterious hunter made it worse.

He slowly crawled towards the nearest tree and climbed to the top branch and yet there were no signs of life as far as he could see. Moonwatcher knew he must made his move soon as it would be too dangerous to stay in a location for too long. And with the moon falling , soon , other big hunters will be coming to hunt.

He slided down to the ground and made a quick dash towards the narrow path. The cuts on his body from brushing against the hard rock no longer bothered him as his survival instinct took over. He reached the mouth of the cave before making a run towards his family. He wasn’t able to bring anything to eat but he knew there will be another moon to hunt.

The End
