So Malee and Georgia stared at each other places for a while before Mary interrupted the girls.
“So, is George agreeable to the arrangement?” asked Mary.
“You know him as well me Mary. He still thinks like a little boy.” smiled Georgia while taking a sip from the wine glass.
Malee had absolutely no clue as to what Mary and Georgia were talking about so she occupied her mouth and hands with the plate full of delicious meals in front of her. She thought the dinner at the house was excessive but this was more than excessive. The numerous dishes and food were prepared so that people like Georgia could take small pieces of her choice while there were people begging on the street for leftover stale bread. The difference was stunning especially for Malee, who was no more than an another begger child from slum less than a month ago. She was now having lunch at the restaurant at the top of the shopping mall, catering to people who had never needed to wash a dish or clean their own room in their lives.
But the food was delicious and Malee wasn’t complaining. Mary and Georgia continued discussing with their plans till Malee has almost filled herself. Georgia took a look at Malee and shook her head and sighed.
“You can’t be eating that much on the night.” said Georgia to Malee who was starting to feel the drowsy effect of full stomach. Mary sighed and turned back to Georgia.
“Well, I will have to train her. Another plate?” asked Mary.
“Yes. more of the tuna sashimi. I miss Pacific Ocean blue fin tuna while I was in Norway.” replied Georgia. Mary nodded and went out of the room, leaving Georgia and Malee.
“What do you think about Michael?” asked Georgia suddenly.
“I am sorry?” replied Malee. That was the only thing she could say about Michael. She had not talked to him since that day when she offered to help him to carry the heavy bags to the new garden.
“You like him?” asked Georgia again. She was direct to the point like an adult, unlike George, who still behaves like a child every now and then.
“Well, I just started working not too long ago so I have not actually talk to him much. So I can’t say.” replied Malee. She wasn’t sure what was Georgia trying to say but decided it is better to be vague than answer her. She learnt that trick from her friends who had been caught with stolen wallets several times, only to reply that they found it lying on the road and that they were looking for the owner to return the wallet. Of course, that wasn’t the reason, but that would got them off the hook and a night in the cell at the police station.
“What about George?” asked Georgia with a smile. Malee wasn’t sure if she wanted to know whether she was being tested or asked for her opinion but the door opened and Mary came in with 2 more plates in her hand.
“One for you and the one for me.” said Mary as she put down the plates on the table one after another. “Are you two talking while I was away?”
“Yes. And no. I was asking Malee if she likes working at the house.” replied Georgia. Malee could only nod but she wondered why Georgia needed to lie to Mary about their conversation.
“Yes, I like it very much.” said Malee, adding to Georgia’s reply.
Thankfully for her, the lunch was quickly done and they left the restaurant for more shopping. The rest of the days became more or less same with people bowing and Georgia taking whatever she wanted from the shops. All in all, they went home with several heels, handbags and new set of dresses with more of the items at the mall top be delivered to home at later. Once they reached the house, Mary asked Malee to change back into the staff uniform and took the clothes into Georgia’s room.
“Don’t worry. You will wear it again very soon.” said Mary. Malee wasn’t sure if she liked it because it was very tight, not only making breathing difficult but also showing her body for everyone to see. She wondered what would Michael or George would think if they saw her in that dress. Maybe that was the intention of Georgia, Malee wondered. With that, she followed Mary back to servants’ house and a short nap before joining the rest in preparation for dinner.
