Jim closed the captain’s diary after writing the non-events that happened that day. He knew the control center would be eagerly waiting for his daily report as usual but there wasn’t much to report , not till tomorrow anyway. The ship just went into Saturn’s orbit as expected and the crew did their jobs as they were trained.
Jim looked out of his window in front of him and see the red giant completely covered the while space. Saturn , the largest planet in the Solar System , was practically within the reach of hands. The mission , which had taken ten years and billions of dollars was about to bear its fruits and his name would be remembered forever in the space textbooks.
The mission , which was to deep dive into the Saturn’s core via the great red spot and mine the almost unlimited volume gas would provide the mankind with enough power to last for centuries. On Earth , demand for energy had outgrown the supply and mankind looked into the heaven to look for the solution. And hence , the mission was born.
“Captain, we will be approaching the spot in 3 hours” , the intercom sounded.
Jim stood up and walked towards the door. The time had come for him to resume control of the cockpit. He straightened his jacket and grabbed his hat from the hanger. He looked into the mirror once more and stepped out of his room to the ship’s corridor.
The ship itself was ten times the largest cruise ships on earth yet only had less than 100 human staff. Most of it’s operation jobs had been outsourced to robots. There were a thousand robots for each person on the ship , another record for the mankind.
The elevator door opened and Jim was once again in the cockpit. He sat down at the captain chair and placed his palms on the sides. It wasn’t just to look good however , his bio and palm prints would be read by the chair. As the ship approached the target , the storm’s intensity was starting to affect the shop’s electronic systems. Although the ship was designed for this purpose , the great intensity means that the effects could not be totally insulated.
Then eye of the great red spot would be seen dead center of the screen in front of Jim. He took a deep breath and gave the order.
“Go!”
The End.
