It was only 50 years after that humanity had realized it had surrendered to the machines. By then , there was no stopping them. They had pervaded into every decision making process that had been designed by human. In the greatest of ironies , those systems were designed by human to control other human. But they had underestimated themselves in creating a system would judge it’s creators.

It all started in the later part of 20th century by rise of computing power. The rise enabled the automation of manual labors and decision making process. It accumulated into smart phones where almost everyone had was connected to every other human. It brought the already existing global network , the internet , from the desktop to a phone in the pocket.

With that , all other systems turned into automation frenzy and before long , you can book a holiday to order a pizza using your phone and the system at the other end would adapt it to your own personal taste. It brought great joy to the most advanced of countries but spelled the doom for the rest of the third world countries. With factories being automated , there would be no knowledge transfer and hence no advancement of the economy.

It didn’t take long for the humanity to realized that the gap between haves and have-nots have widened further than it had ever been. It was not only the wealth but the knowledge since it was all centralized from a computer far away. And to make the matter worse , the servers that hosted the knowledge and information required gigantic amount of natural resource to maintain , denying the poor of the some of the most necessary components of life.

The end result of all those were inevitable. World War 3 started in early parts 21st century and pitted the knows against the unknows. It was a war of spears and pitchforks against a nuclear weapons and it didn’t take too long to conclude. But before it ended , it wiped out major cities of some of the most populous countries. And next level of machines were created.

Human decided that they would no longer pass on the judgement , instead would let the machines handle it. System J was designed and built by the United Nations Engineering Dept and elected into the Security Council by unanimous votes.

That was how the ghost and the machine were taken apart.
