“3..2..1…Dive!” , a shout boomed throughout the ship like a cannon. Soon , another boom was heard slamming the metal hull of mini-sub against the blue Pacific ocean.
Lord Michael stood on the deck simply observing the entire operation. His family had been sailing across the oceans since the times of the crusaders and he understood what must his only son be thinking of in he sub at that moment. The operation “Trident” was entirely funded by his family’s fortune obtained through the generations of delivering spices and slaves over the oceans. His son , John Michael , was an oceanographer , and was adamant of being in the sub over his objections. The project was to observe the hot-spots near the deepest parts of the trenches.
The hot-spots were where the first life on the earth thought to have begun and were of intense interest to the scientists. However , they were located only at the deepest parts of the great oceans’ trenches or valleys and were near impossible to observe them fully due to the crushing pressure of the billions of tons of water above.
Hence the operation Trident and its mini-sub. The sub’s exterior was design and built in joint venture with NASA , an American space agency , with the same materials as the shuttle spacecraft. It was designed to be able to withstand the twice the pressure found at the deepest part of the ocean and enough oxygen for 3 men to sustain for 2 days in it.
Knock , knock.
The sudden knocks at the door distracted Lord Michael from his thoughts as he rose up to open the door. It was captain Obvier. An experienced captain with more than 10,000 days at the ocean.
“Sir , we have reports from the sub. It would be reaching the destination in 30 min. Would you like to come to the observation room?” , said captain Obvier.
“Of course , I would be there” , smiled Lord Michael.
Captain Obvier left Lord Michael alone to change and in a few minutes , both men joined the rest of the expedition members at the observation room. It was dark and the only source of lights were from flickering monitors spread across the table. Everyone was staring at a specific monitor and Lord Michael could see it was the display monitor for the mini-sub’s depth. It was approaching the destination and the silence in the room was unbearable.
Then a static noise came out from the speaker. It was from the mini-sub. The men frantically tuned the knobs to get the clearer sound and finally they achieved in hearing the sound of John Michael. It was so unexpected that it was as if time itself stood still. The voice from the speaker said ,
“My God, it’s full of people!”
The End.
