Writers’ Journal #50 – Murder on the island resort – Part 6

The silence echoed throughout the corridor. It was deafening. Mrs Smith stared at the envelope as if she was expecting it to burst into flames. Mrs Jamie simply fainted right on the spot. We were too stunned to see the name on the paper that nobody caught her falling on the floor till a few moments later.

Then it was riot. There were shouting , running of what one would expected to see at a lunatic asylum. Those who were still in control of our mind , went about bringing the order back from chaos. We first carried Mrs Jamie to her room onto the chair and attempted to brought her back. It was unsuccessful till someone brought whisky from the dining room and she was up and drunk.

We decided to call an emergency meeting in the dining room and went about calling each of the other guests. Soon , everyone , except Major Sholto , was in the dining room wondering who would be the next name to appear in the envelope. The meeting started with Mrs Smith  , always the lady , opening with how she wished she was the one instead of Major Sholto. Nobody argued with her on that point so she moved on to the next topic , the motive.

I listened attentively as I was new to the party and interested in what the rest had found out before I had arrived. And after a few shouting here and there , I came to the conclusion that they had found out exactly , nothing. Fruitless searching on the island had brought them no closer to the victims or the motive behind the disappearance. The only conclusion seems to be that there was nowhere on the island that could be used to hide the bodies.

Mrs Jamie raised her voice to speak up on what seemed to have been occupying her mind. With Major Sholto gone , three was noone left to lead the investigation. All of them were men and women of grander reputation and careers than average men on the street but no Sherlock Holmes or even Inspector Lestrade. And nobody wanted to forward his or her name , for the fear of being the next name in the envelope as what happened to Major Sholto. It was stalemate for sometimes before someone in the back stood up. It was I.
