Writers’ Journal #65 – Murder on the island resort – Part 21

The tunnel was dark and seemed as if it never ended. Even with the light from the torch , it was hard to see any further than a few meter ahead of us. So we stepped in sync , two adults holding hands and tip-toeing , in the dark. Every few tens of steps or so Mrs Jamie would made a mark on the wall with the torch as we agreed upon. Soon , we reached the first turn and Mrs Jamie signaled to me that she went to the right when she was lost there the first time.

So we followed her previous path and took right every time we reached a turn. It went on for a perhaps an hour or so when I first stepped on something which sounded like a glass. I squeezed Mrs Jamie hand to signal a stop and took the torch from her other hand. I shined on the object and to our surprise  , and horror , it was a spectacle of someone who we were familiar with , the butler.

“Oh my , ” Mrs Jamie gasped.

“He must have been brought to here as well , ” I added.

“If he was walking by himself , it is unlikely he would have left the spec in the tunnel. , ” said Mrs Jamie.

“Yes. As you can see , it is made of a thick glass and it would be a surprise if he could even walk normally without these” , said I.

“What do you think happened to him? , ” Mrs Jamie asked.

I looked at the broken spectacle at my feet for a few moment and suggested we continued till we reached the end of the tunnel. The whole thing seemed more and more strange as time passed by and I was not sure I could reach any conclusions from a pair of spectacles. By then , I was regretting not informing the rest after Mrs Jamie had freed me from the cold room.

What must they be thinking of the whole thing now? I wondered. A man whom they suspected as the killer and tied and locked in the cold room had suddenly disappeared without any traces. Then I could see a faint shining light ahead and knew we were almost free from the darkness.
