Writers’ Journal #70 – Murder on the island resort – Part 25

Spread the love

The evening had come and so did our energies. We had a good rest from the satisfying lunch made by Mrs Jamie , a duck roasted over the oven fire and vegetable salad. From what she told us about how she used to help her father in their restaurant when she was young , it must have worked. It was definitely a very good roasted duck , perhaps not perfect as the version made by the cook on the first night when I arrived but it would do considering the situation we were in.

After heavy lunch , we too a good rest with a few bottles on wine in lobby and some of us even went to play the billard in the next room with the doors opened , of course. The house was basically an opened house since all the doors and windows are opened. It was to ensure there were no blind spots for anyone to disappear. Moreover , we were also advised to stick in pairs so that each of us had a pair of eyes on the other. So as I said , the evening came soon enough for us.

The temperature was cool enough for us to walk in the dark tunnel , yes the sun was not yet completely set so there was still natural light. So that was how we started our adventure into the tunnel. Since the marks were done on every right side , Mrs Jamie and I took right turns at every cross , we decided to the the other way. Different set of markers to be marked every left side of the walls and to do left turns instead. After a few tuns , we quickly realized this was going down into the basement level of the resort and not outside. There were a few down steps along the way and before long , it was getting hotter and hotter as if there was a furnace burning besides us.

One of the ladies remarked that the tempreature was like in the kitchen and soon we found out to be true. General Lee , who was leading the group signalled the end of the path and the door was opened to the bright light of the kitchen , where Mrs Jamie was roasting the duck. Apparently , the heat from the roast was trapped in the tunnel and that was what we felt near the end of the path. We turned around to look at the door and realised it was literally a closed door , which nobody had questioned previously. It was set so that it would autolock once closed and could only be opened from inside the tunnel without the key.

So another mystery of the resort had been solved!
