Writers’ Journal #76 – Murder on the island resort – Part 30

Drop. Drop. Drop.

“Hush”

One of us made a hush sound to sign everyone to keep quiet. It was very faint but surely it was a sound of water dropping from the height. We looked around and soon we found a pool of water in the side of the tunnel. Looking up , we also discovered the source of the pool , there is a leak at the top. It was a small leak and didn’t look as if it would break soon so there was no fear of that but where did the water came from? Everyone stopped at silently stared at the sight of water droplets forming and dropping from the top of the tunnel. Then we saw someone moved. General Lee , as we found out from the lights shining on his face as he squatted down , took a sample of the water to his lip.

“Salty, ” he said. “Definitely sea water”

“Wait a minute. If it is sea water then this tunnel must be … ”

“Yes. We are below the lake, ” added Mrs Jamie. “You see. It makes sense. The island isn’t that big and we have been walking for like 30 min. Where else we would be except outside of the island?”

“So , if this tunnel truly goes below the sea then the end of it must be …”

“the main land!,” added General Lee with a smile.

Suddenly , the realization that there was indeed an escape out of the resort and the impending death lifted our spirit like no other. We continued walking and if not for the fact that it was still dark and all , I felt we would have started singing even! The pace had become noticeably quickened and seemed that General Lee and a few other with breathing problems no longer had them. I could have sworn that General Lee , who was walking in front of me , could have won the London Marathon with his pace!

There was still no light at the end of tunnel but we had been given hope. And since the tunnel appeared to have straightened all the way , it was logical to assumed that we were indeed walking towards our freedom.
