My classmate and I were going back to our homes , we lived next door to each other , when we stumbled upon a stall we never seen before. It must have been the first day it opened for we noticed there were a few baskets of congratulatory flowers at the door. There were a few people queuing at the counter and curious , we decided to join them.
My friend , Sherrie , found a menu on one of the tables and started flipping through it , rather quickly I might add.
“This is a sweet potato shop! , ” she exclaimed after flipping several pages.
“Sherrie , it is pronounced as PO-TA-TO. Mrs Smith does say it that way , ” I corrected her at the same time referencing to our English teacher.
“Wrong! My dad said in England , where English language originated , it is PO-TEH-TO , ” retorted Sherrie.
We had been friends since kindergarten and it wouldn’t be normal for us not to got into a some sort of argument or another. We were quite found of arguing for argument sake actually. She said , I said then eventually one of us would win. the PO-TA-TO , PO-TEH-TO was another one of the innumerable arguments when we were stopped by the lady at the counter. We were so focused on the correct pronunciation that we didn’t realized the queue in front of us had already cleared.
“What would you like dears? , ” asked the sweet looking lady at the counter while smiling at us.
“Mdm , is it pronounced as PO-TA … ,” Started Sherrie.
“We would have 2 of no 3 pls , ” I interrupted before she could complete. She sense the adults behind us were quite eager to try out the new shop and would be annoyed at 2 children arguing in front of them
Sherrie gave me a wicked stare before grabbing the sweet potato ice-cream from the lady. As usual , I was left to pay for the reason that I interrupted her mid-way. I paid quickly and chased after Sherrie before she could crossed the road. When I caught up with her , she had already completed eating the ice-cream with her lips the color of sweet potato. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud to more annoying look from her.
Eventually , she managed to wipe her lips and we both reach our homes without anymore arguments.
