I don’t want to edit yesterday’s post so slight correction as to the story going forward. Malee was alone and not carrying the baby.
“Bring her to the staff kitchen and give her someone to wear.” said the housekeeper to another lady. “I will see to young master and someone clean up here.”
She quickly disappeared into the house as one lady pulled Malee towards the rows of houses at the far corner of the garden. She realised it was not only the house, but the land it was on was big. From the gate to the main house, it took her a few minutes to push the cart and now from the house towards where the servants stayed, another long distance. It must have been bigger than the dumpsite behind her home.
Once they were in a small kitchen, she gave Malee a piece of cloth and an old set of clothes for her. Malee quickly dried herself and changed to the new clothes. They wen’t shiny and loose fitting but an improvement to mum’s clothes, Malee thought.
“Done? Young master asking for you. Follow me,” said the housekeeper by the kitchen entrance. She must have come back to brought Malee back to the main house. Malee followed her as she was told, and soon they were back where her cart hit the car. To her surprise, there were no glasses on the ground or her cart. The servants had swept everything clean, as if nothing had happened. Before she could say about her cart, the housekeeper turned around to remind her to took off her slippers and clean her feet before entering the house.
At the marble stairs towards the wooden door at the entrance, Malee took off her slippers as she was told and rubbed her feet several times on the rubber mat. She had never been inside any house other than her own and conveniently forgot her cart from the excitement. Housekeeper watched silently as Malee carried on rubbing her feet. Once satisfied, the housekeeper pushed the left side of the door and went into the house, followed by Malee.
