Mary and Malee too left the room quietly after the professor had done so. George was soundly asleep at the couch and Mary went into the inner room to get a blanket to cover him. Once they were out of the house, Malee blurted to Mary.

“Am I going to be in trouble for arguing with Georgia?”

Mary gave a quick smile towards Malee.

“No, dear. She is always arguing with everyone so don’t worry. Nothing will happen to you. George wouldn’t let her.” said Mary, in a reassuring tone. Malee felt her fears subsided but she felt another question rising.

“But isn’t Georgia smarter than George? I don’t understand why she can’t go against George.”

“Its the unspoken rule of the family. You will learn one day.” said Mary. Malee could only nod as they walked back to the servant house for a well-earned rest from serving two masters. Malee climbed the stairs back to her own room and lied down on the bed for a short nap of her own. She woke up an hour later, feeling refreshed. As she changed to her uniform, she happened to looked outside of the windows and saw Mary in discussion with Georgia. She wondered what was it about but she could hear the rest of the servants going down the stairs so she quickly changed and rushed out of the room.

She ran out into the garden to catch up with the rest into the main house’s kitchen for the dinner preparation. Just as she was about to take the vegetables to wash, Mary appeared behind her with a basket of potatoes.

“Master likes it.” said Mary with a smile.

Malee giggled and took the basket of potatoes and started peeling them for her speciality, fried potatoes dish. The dinner was a quickly over and done without much argument between the twins, to the relief of the servants and they quickly cleaned up the dining room and rushed back to the servant’s house. Just as Malee was about to run out of the kitchen to return as well, Mary signalled Malee to follow her to the corner.

“Tomorrow, when you are awake at usual time, take a shower , brush your teeth and come to my room.” whispered Mary. Malee nodded wondering if it has anything to do with what she saw in the evening from her windows. She quickly finished her chores and joined rest with the dinner at the servant’s house. There were plenty of fried potatoes left from the dinner so she brought them back and shared with the rest of the servants. It was a much more jovial dinner compared to the previous night with laughter and occassional songs  and even a dance from Michael. Servants’ house, although not as grand as the main house, it was much better than what Malee had experienced with Karaoke machines and individual bedrooms for the servants.

Malee went to bed after the karaoke session and closed her eyes wondering what would happen the next day. She didn’t have to wonder for long as the morning came soon enough by the sound of the alarm and Malee jumped out of the bed in anticipation of the day. She brushed her teeth twice and showered under the cold water, which made her even more awake then she was. Then she changed to a fresh uniform and made her way to Mary’s room, across the hall. She knocked twice on the door softly for Mary to opened the door and letting her in. Malee could see Michael and his father still asleep on the bed and followed Mary to the another room. She sat down in front of the mirror as she was told and found herself prepared wih various makeups and perfumes by Mary.

The smell was so overwhelming that she nearly sneezed only to stop at the last moment so as not to awake those who were stil asleep. Mary then took out a dress from the wardrobe and asked her to wear it. Without understanding what was going on, she changed her dress from the uniform to the dress handed over by Mary. It was near perfect fit.

“It was given to my by George’s mother when I was taking care of her.” said May as she remembered the moments with George’s deceased mother.

“Lets go. The sun will be up soon and we are accompanying Georgia for a trip to the beach and then shopping.”
