For a moment, Malee thought George was staring at her as he stopped in the middle of the room, trying to stop his body from getting close to the girls in the tub. Instinctively, both the girls covered themselves with their hands. Then Georgia grabbed the same sponge that Malee was using to wash her back and throw at George, while shouting some words in a foreign language that Malee didn’t understand. It reminded her of the hissing sound the snakes made when they are facing their enemies. George could avoid the sponge easily as Malee had squeezed the water from it, making it as light as a feather.
“Sorry. I didn’t know.” stammered George. “I thought..”
“If you are sorry, why are you still here and staring at us?” shouted Georgia. Not too many people could make George apologized after throwing a wet sponge and shouting at him. Malee wondered, as she wrapped her body tighter with her hands, whether anyone else but Georgia could do so. Both of them could sense George was apologizing, but still staring at both of them, especially at Malee, which made Georgia even madder.
“Out!” shouted Georgia once more and George quickly went out of the room with the tail between his legs. If only the police commissioner could see that, Malee thought. Once George was out of the room, Georgia stepped out of the tub suddenly and walked towards the door. She slammed the door so hard that Malee had to close her ears from shock. Georgia stood there, with her chest moving up and down, and water dripping from her hair, staring at the door. Malee too stepped out of the tub and quickly grabbed a towel nearby and wrapped Georgia’s body with it.
“Let’s dry up first.” whispered Malee. Georgia seemed more angry than usual and it would be the best time to ask her for the reason while Malee could hear the air coming in and out of her nose. With Georgia still standing still, Malee tried to rub her body with the towel. It was a while before Georgia regained her senses and found Malee drying her legs with the towel.
“Thanks. I am fine. That idiot.” said Georgia before walking over to the tub to grab another towel and gently wrapped it around her hair. She looked over to Malee and threw another towel at her before looking at herself in the mirror. Malee caught the towel and dried herself before walking over to the mirror and joined Georgia.
“I hope he doesn’t spy on you when I am not here.” said Georgia.
“I am sure George isn’t that kind of person.” replied Malee.
“I don’t know you care about him so much.” said George. Malee blushed. She had forgotten the girl beside her was the mistress of the house and George sister. She was just another servant from the street.
“I meant George, young master, wouldn’t do anything of that sort.” replied Malee while bowing at Georgia. She was street smart enough to know how to treat a customer differently from the fellow slum mates. She and her late father’s survival depended on smiling, bowing and apologizing at customers even if the customers were wrong. That seemed to have done the trick on Georgia, who despite her hyper intelligence, was still an emotional being.
“It’s ok. Just don’t get your hopes up. He is just at another level to us.” sighed Georgia while blowing her hair dry. Malee wondered what Georgia meant by “us” because she was certain Georgia differed from the rest, just like her brother. But she decided not to dig further and instead gave a nod to Georgia.
“Dried? Let’s go out and ask him what is the issue.” said Georgia, taking out a bathrobe from the cabinet besides the mirror and passing another to Malee. She then led the way out of the room to the bedroom, followed by Malee.
“Yes, George. Why were you peeping at us?” attacked Georgia once they were out of the bathroom. George was sitting on the bed, with the slight pinkish face and boyish smile. Malee wondered if it he was smiling because he saw them naked in the tub or some other thing but she definitely saw his face became redder once he saw them coming out of the room.
“I wasn’t peeping. I just come in to tell you…” said George.
“Tell me what?” asked Georgia.
“They have landed.” said George.
