I couldn’t remember anything about her but I was told we were very close. Apparently , we used to visit her every Christmas. I had nearly forgotten all about it till I turned twenty-one. Then I received a call from a man who said he was representing grandma to follow her will!

Who would have thought a will could last for so long? Anyway , the will stated to transfer the rights of the ancestral home to me when I turned twenty-one. I had just completed the degree and had yet to land a job. It didn’t take much to persuade me to leave home and to fly over to England the very next day. To make the trip sweeter , Jamie , my best friend , also tagged along with me.

The flight was non-eventful and we arrived at the Heathrow airport and straight to the lawyer’s office. We received the necessary documents and then on our ways to shopping. Then we were on our way to the location given to us in the will.

The trip took us several hours by train , bus and then cab. It was an old cottage near the outskirt of the town and a bit further. We had to take our steps carefully to avoid landing on the countless creepy-crawlies in the garden and in the house. Jamie remarked it was like an Indiana Jones movies and I had to agree with her. But before the sun set , we had unpacked our bags and prepared the beds.

We went back into the town’s center for dinner and strolled back to the cottage. Fortunately , the electricity and the lights were still functioning and we had a great time looking around the place. All in all , there was nothing in the house worth salvaging except for the grand mirror in the living room. We had a good look at it and we both thought it was strange for it to be still clear and polished compared to the rest of the furniture.

Maybe we had a jet-lag or perhaps the beer in England was stronger than back home but soon we both found ourselves heading for the bed. The night turned chilly quickly and I started shivering. Then I remembered someone came over to the bed and covered me with the blanket. I assumed it was Jamie but she protested the next day!

The End.

I was five years old when grandma passed away in England.
