When I knocked the third time with more force , the door creaked. I was so stunned by the realization that I had to take a step back. With the kind of events happening at that time , I couldn’t believe that someone would leave the door opened , not the least of Mrs Jamie. She gave me the impression of a very cautious lady and someone who would plan ahead two or three times before taking any actions.

But there I was with the breakfast set on one hand and the door knob on the other. I slightly pushed the door opened and popped my head in just so I could view the room. It was bright inside , for it was one of those rooms that faced the garden and the morning sun , yet no shadows nor signs of movements. Just as I was about to say hello , there was a tap on my shoulder.

“Hullo. What are you doing?” , said Mrs Wilbur , the man residing at the adjacent room to Mrs Jamie. Apparently , he too had just woken up , from the smell of his breath , and saw me peeping into his neighbor’s room. It didn’t look too good for me so I stuttered a few words before managing to compose myself.

“I , I was bringing her the breakfast and found the door unlocked.” , said I.

“She may have left early for the breakfast and having tea in the garden. I have seen her a few times in the garden after breakfast.” , replied Mr Wilbur.

“Oh is it? Then I must have made a mistake. Thank you” , said I.

After a few more pleasantries , he left for the dining room for breakfast. I wondered if there was any food left for him but then I left it to him to find out for himself. After pretending to walk towards the garden , and making sure he really did went down the stairs , he turned around and went back to Mrs Jamie’s room.

I was one of the first to arrive in the dining room to prepare the breakfast and I was sure Mrs Jamie didn’t come down at all. So if anything , she should still be in the room. So I pushed the door and went in.

I knocked twice again when there was no sounds coming out from the room.
